The principal of Layering
A conventional layering
system is based on the functions of three principal layers: BASE,
INSULATION, and SHELL. The layering
system you choose will depend on the demands you're planning to
place on your garments. Wear more than one layer in cooler conditions
or a single layer when the weather is warm or when your body's
working hard |
|
BASE LAYER - It
is both lightweight and compact but plays the most critical role
in a clothing system. An effective base layer fabric must wick
perspiration from your skin to the outer surface of the fabric
where it evaporates quickly, leaving your skin warm and dry. To
do this the garment must be close fitting yet stretchy, so as
not to restrict movement. Of course, the great thing about base
layer is their versatility - Wear them alone, under a windproof
shell or as part of a multi-layer clothing system. For colder
conditions try a mid-weight base layer for even greater insulation.

INSULATION
- The jackets in this
layer are designed to trap body
heat and to maintain a layer
of stable warm air. This creates
a comfortable microclimate around
your body, which 'insulates' you
from the cold. It takes practices
to know how many and how thick
these layers should be in order to
keep your body at its optimum
temperature, so be prepared to
experiment. Fleece fabrics are
amongst the most efficient
insulators for cold/wet conditions.
They offer high warmth and are
easy to care for. |

| SHELL
LAYERS - This is
the outer layer of your clothing system designed to protect you
from wind and rain. Ideally a shell should be created using breathable
fabrics and designed to give good ventilation adjustable zips and
cuffs. So when your body heats up, you can instantly cool down.
Shells should also have important features such as pockets and hoods.
The pockets should be positioned for easy access. While The hood
offers protection from the elements it should not obstruct your
vision. |

| SOFT
SHELL - This
layer can also be considered as a shell and worn alone on the outside.
It is usually accompanied with a layer of thin fleece to enhance
its warming properties if neccessary. A soft shell is normally stretchable
and more tight fit, which gives the climber more flexibility in
movement compared to a normal shell. A soft shell is breathable
and comes with windproof and water repellency properties to keep
the weather elements out. |
